Tarifa is the holy grail of kite surfing; it's where spot really took on a new direction. The vast area around the southern part of Spain called 'Cadiz' offers kite surfer a unique choice of locations to head out from depending on the wind direction. The main beach in Tarifa covers and area of around 11km, providing white soft sand and clear waters. The water conditions when the wind blows can become fairly choppy and rough and some spots along the long coastline offer excellent wave riding. If you are new to the sport then you will have your pick from over 30 kite surfing schools, predominantly based in the Tarifa town along Calle Batalla.
As you arrive in Malaga you will notice the size of the airport, small and compact may well have you alluded that the area is remote but there is everything you need, including hire cars and restaurants. If you are taking your own kite surfing equipment then be prepared for a wait in the airport as the extra large bags will come through after all suitcases, so relax and get your passport ready for inspection. There are a number of car hire companies operating in the airport and the 7 seater are perfect to fit kite surfing equipment into without too much of a struggle and have you mobile depending on the wind direction.
The journey time to Tarifa from Malaga Airport is about 40 minutes but a fairly easy ride, you will pass the infamous Tarifa wind turbines that dominate the hilltop landscape.
From small beginnings as a fishing village Tarifa is now a busy cosmopolitan town with cafes, bars, seafood restaurants and markets jotted within the landmarks. Jewellery and craftwork can be picked up in any of the small local shops around the old town and cafes offer a refreshing alternative for the vegetarian visitor, including healthy snack bars.
During the summer months from June to August Tarifa has some consistent trade winds and this attracts the top kite surfers from around the world to practice their latest tricks. Due to the increase visiting for the kite surfing, local bars and make Tarifa the place to be, and pop-up parties and bbq's are often placed top of the to-do list for kite surfers visiting here.
Tarifa is a laid back spot with rustic charm mixed together with a modern day vibe. Once here you can truly see why its remains so popular with not just kite surfing enthusiasts but other fellow travelers.
